Umbilical Chords (pre-Monoshock)
Aug 02, 2015, 08:02
Just wanted to say that I had the extreme privilege to see a reunion of the Umbilical Chords, which Grady & Rubin from Monoshock had originally played in before that band, last Saturday.

They did a bunch of their old originals, along with perfectly-chosen expected covers (Electric Eels, Flipper, Radio Birdman, Pagans, etc.)

I never got to see them back in the day, since I only met those guys (and gal) after we moved to the Bay Area (them from Isla Vista in southern CA, me from the east coast of the USA), so it was a complete revelation to see Grady (who ties with Tom Carter as the finest improvisational lead guitarist I've ever played with) playing strictly rhythm, while Rubin expertly handled the James Williamson/Cheetah Chrome/Deniz Tek/etc. style punk rock lead riffage. It was equally revelatory to see Jay Hinman (best known for writing the 'Agony Shorthand' blog and 'Superdope' fanzine') unleashing his inner hardcore-frontman. The only thing that wasn't revelatory was confirmation that Beth "Ramona" Allen (Loudmouths, Meat Sluts, Pineapple Princess, Women-tors [tribute band]) is the most kick-ass female bassist in the SF Bay Area.

Yeah-Hup!
