Nice issue of Smash Hits from 81' to read with a Teardrops interview, and a very mashed looking Cope on the cover.

Indeed - and blimey, Smash Hits interviewing Mark E. Smith? Feels inconceivable now, even if the interviewer does describe him as "typically north country working class (without the flat cap)" and "the thinking man's Andy Capp".

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised at the breadth of artists they covered. Wasn't the sugar coated fan fest it later bacame. Hell, they even gave the great Scars album 'Author Author' 8 out of 10. The early pic of an impossibly fey looking Depeche Mode was priceless, esp Dave Gahan. I'm gonna spend a few hours rooting through that guys site, think he's got quite a few issues of Smash Hits from the same period. I'll report back if there's anything else worth a gander.

Check on Brian McCloskey's 'albums' - full of other Smash Hits copies!
Like loads!
Read that as a kid, probably informed me from '81 onwards on the more 'alternative; side of pop.
Not bad when your 8!
Any publication that has the rigor to feature Duran Duran and King one week and The Teardrops, or The Bunnymen, or The Mary Chain another must go down as a wee bit of a treasure.
But then that's what the charts were like back then, magic times indeed.
Cheers!
