I’ve heard and read a couple of interviews with His High Bobness over the last week in which he pretty much says the same thing - part of which was his recollection of touring ‘School Halls’ with The Ramones and Talking Heads in 1976. Strange I’m thinking cos I thought the only time The Ramones played in England in 76 was the Independence Day gigs with the Flamin’ Groovies at the Roundhouse. In June 77 they were back at the Roundhouse with Talking Heads and the Saints ( who were great and not, thank God, the Boomtown Rats!). They did play some gigs in the two week before this, one of which was Slough College (wish I’d known) and the support here may have been the Rats as a very poor substitute for the Saints. So: a college gig (standard touring venues at the time), not a school hall, and 77 not 76. Hope that clears that up.

I was on an alternative Economics course last year with somebody whose dad was a greengrocer in the mid 80s. She said she noticed at the time Sir Bobness was making his callouts for support for the 'famine' that a lot of her dad's wares had produce of Ethiopia printed on them or however things were done at the time. So it looks like there was a major parallel to the Irish 'famime' where there was an active, possibly thriving export trade at the same time the native population were suffering. Looks like Band/Live Aid were actually something of a distraction from a problem which should have had a somewhat different focus.

The Ramones and Talking Heads played the Majestic dance hall in Plymouth in June '77 and the other act on the bill should have been Blondie but for some reason they didn't play. Not a Boomtown Rat to be seen.
