Metal is my blind-spot. Someone hit me with your best shot. My ears are open.
Metal is an extremely broad (burning) church these days so it's next to impossible to recommend a sole album and say it's representative of all things metal. However, you could try these...
Judas Priest - British Steel. If I had to pick, at gun point, an album that defines Heavy Metal in its most traditional form and by that I mean sublimely ridiculous but totally wonderful, I'd say this in that it's utterly daft, catchy as Hell, extremely entertaining and rocks like a muthafucker from beginning to end. May induce much air guitaring and punching of the air. \m/
Opeth - Ghost Reveries and/or Watershed for melancholic prog metal vibes.
Mastodon - Crack the Skye. More prog metal excess.
Nebula - Charged. Stoner riffment par excellence. Nebula are boss!
HIM - Dark Light. Goth Pop Metal hookery
Turisas - The Varangian Way and/or Stand and Fight. Insane Battle Metal bombast and glorious silliness. For one's inner viking. Handy for you cos you live on a boat cos you will want to stand on the prow waving a sword, trust me on this.
Anyone - st. Funky 90's art-metal in the Jane's Addiction vein.
Loads more genres within genres. Might add some later.
