Soundtracks of our Lives 31/08/14

Blimey, not up yet?

Anyhoo...

Ravi Shankar - Three Ragas
Kate Bush - Aerial
Acid Mothers Temple - Lady Pink Lemonade
Black Moth - Condemned to Hope

Opeth - Pale Communion. Love it. A natural PROGression from 'Heritage' with more overtly rocky elements present but still out of the metal zone pretty much. The keys, drums and extensive use of vocal harmonies are the stars here (imo), with a host more influences inserted in to the current Opeth mix. Some gorgeous tunes and great playing on display. Don't be a Dopeth, listen to Opeth!

Satyricon - Age of Nero. Chunky, riffy, catchy black metal with a pleasingly dirty guitar sound. Yer BM Purists may not approve, but I like this and the previous album a lot.

Limb-st
Ziguri - st
Anyone - St
The Haarp Machine - Disclosure
Gum Takes Tooth - Mirror Folds
Sudden Death of Stars - All Unrevealed Parts of the Unknown.
Kruk - Before.
Stan Clarke - Children of Forever

Have a nice week!

Been away in Lundy, so haven't had that much listening time.However,

Public Service Broadcasting - War Room EP, Elfstedentocht Parts 1&2, New Dimensions in Sound

Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation. Been listening to this on and off for the last few months, and very enjoyable this last album is too.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lions Skull

The Chameleons @ Toronto, Berlin and Free Trade Hall. Preferred the first 2 with an audience interaction. They sound even better live, and lets face it they're pretty good on record.

Simple Minds Compilation from their first 5 albums I think? So So on first lesson. Not particularly blown away by them. It seems to me that The Horrors are a definite improvement on the sound they are supposed to have ripped off.

A Certain Ratio - The Graveyard & The Ballroom. First time I've heard em, leaving not an unfavourable impression. Joy Division seem an obvious comparison

Wolf People @ Greenman 2010

Wooden Wand @ Beerwolf, Falmouth 2013

Vibravoid@ Exeter Phoenix, 2013

This is the Kit @ Miss Peapods 2012. Much prefer them to First Aid Kit!

Tiny Vipers @ End of the Road Festival, 2009

*Edit*, Oh and thanks to Sweetcheat for some of the recordings - parcel arrived yesterday

Robert Wyatt '68 -these long-lost tapes capture a young, hungry and inspired creative force let loose in two of America's most legendary studios using time paid for by none other than Jimi Hendrix, who actually contributes a bass line to one track. But the shining muse here is definitely Wyatt, temporarily free between Softs line ups, putting together fascinating, nascent renditions of songs that would ultimately find glory on 'Volume Two', 'Third', 'Matching Mole' and 'Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard'. This is something of a holy grail for Canterbury heads;

Sleaford Mods 'Divide and Exit' - foul mouthed missives belched out with bile by Nottingham's answer to The Streets (or maybe Mark E. Smith, or is it JCC, or Muttley McLad?). I don't know whether to laugh or cry at some of this, but it is undoubtedly entertaining;

Clearlight 'Forever Blowing Bubbles' - hard to categorise this lost French gem from '75: sometimes it's psych, then prog, then avant, then ambient, then the spaciest of space rock. I dig;

July 'July' - many here have waxed lyrical about this magnificent psychedelic record, and I won't demur. It's a belter, worthy to stand alongside Pink Floyd's debut LP (with which it shares many characteristics) and available for less than a tenner at a Sainsbury's near you in a box with The Yardbirds' 'Little Games', Tomorrow's 'Tomorrow', The Idle Race's 'The Birthday Party' and The Gods' 'Genesis'. I am the voice of experience here…;

Primus 'Sailing the Seas of Cheese' - what happened in the Bizarro alternative world when Andy Partridge joined Rush. Yessir! Yessir! Right! Left!

Thin Lizzy 'Thin Lizzy' - standing alone in Phil Lynott's back catalogue is Lizzy's debut LP which sounds nothing like anything else that band ever went on to do - even its first line up. One day I might feel brave enough to pen a full review for this mesmerising and varied celtic gem. But if you're not in on the secret yet, go get this, pop pickers!

Jethro Tull 'Stand Up' - after hearing the sad news of Glenn Cornick's passing, I played Tull's second LP this morning, listening intently to the fabulously inventive bass lines that permeate every great song. He was a master of the four string craft: remember him this way.

As usual, I listened to a load of classical stuff too, including some newly issued radio tapes of the Amadeus Quartet performing Mozart and Schubert, and some of Frans Bruggen's underrated Haydn symphony recordings. Sturm und drang and all that.

Have a great week

Dave

Main listening this week for:

John Cooper Clarke Snap, Crackle and Bop. His second studio album, produced by Hannett and including the terrific "Beasley Street". There's some crackers on here, although a degree of patchiness over LP length. Vini Reilly guests on guitar on a couple of tracks.

The Soft Moon - S/T. Thanks to jpl-m for this one. Can take or leave the vocals, but I really like the music. It occupies a nice Joy Divison/Banshees post-punk space, with occasional Bunnymen-ish and taut gothic bits, even kind of Skeletal Family in a good way at times. Like.

Otherwise:

A Certain Ratio - Early

Crispy Ambulance - Live On A Hot August Night 12"
A Certain Ratio - Greetings Four 12"
The The - Infected
Pet Shop Boys - Introspective
New Order - Technique

Glide - Curvature of the Earth
The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters

Mark Stewart - The Politics of Envy
The Wedding Present - Valentina
