Metallica have sounded terrible every time I've seen them, first time was just as they started playing stadiums at Wembley Arena which was generally regarded as an echo chamber anyway and I thought they're going to have to up their game is they stay at this level, next coupla times it was even worse , finally gave up after a show at Newcastle where the combined mush & echo was married up with probably the most vile audience I've ever encountered. Angelwitch supporting Uriah Heep in 1980 was terrible, a kind of washing machine roar combined with a biscuit tin thump Lords of the New Church mid eighties in London sounded terrible except for 1 point about 10 yards back and to the right of the stage which led to a weird audience all grouped in a big lump whilst the rest was sparsely covered in those too drunk/stupid/talking to each other to notice

How long has that place been a venue? i remember it as the main independent cinema in London. I did see The damned asa non-costumed Naz Nomad and the Nightmares there at one of the psychedelic all nighters though. Can't remember the sound quality. Wish that '72 Iggy and the Stooges gig from there would appear as a recording. Stevo

I'm all in favour of equal opportunities, but it's probably not a good idea to employ a deaf person as sound engineer. I quite like The Scala. It's a nice place. Dinosaur Jr. blew the walls off that place one night. Fucking magic! Yes - it's a good venue now that they've got the PA/acoustics sorted out. Nonetheless, I saw both Animal Collective and Comets on Fire there in the mid-noughties and on both occasions the sound was so poor that fans were exiting before the end in droves. By the end of the Comets gig there was hardly anyone left. By the time of the next gig I saw there (Meat Puppets / Wooden Shjips) it was sounding much better though, so I can only assume ythey'd taken note of customer complaints and done something about it.

Hawkwind @ Wolverhampton Civic Hall, 'Silver Machine' tour c 1973? Just a wall of very loud noise. Their much vaunted light show looked like a Halfords emergency lantern flashing red perched on one of the amps. AND my lift went early & I had to walk miles before calling 'Dad's taxi' .....didn't bother with them again

Arcade Fire touring Neon Bible at Manchester Apollo, massive let down after the Funeral gig at the Academy.
