Yeah Yeah Yeah - The Story of Pop
Jun 25, 2014, 12:33
Have finally made it to the end of this awesome tome (no longer having a daily commute means that I now average the meagre sum of 20 pages of written (print) material a week before my eyelids start getting heavy - I blame children, the internet etc etc.) - has anybody else read it?

I must say that I haven't previously been a big fan of Bob Stanley's writing (or St Etienne for that matter), but this is an incredible piece of sustained music criticism, which is often very funny too. You could spend years going through all the various stuff he flags.

I particularly liked his description of metal as 'a state of mind' rather than a genre - though he loses points for referring to Black Sabbath's Tommy Iommi...

Been meaning to read this myself.
Think I read that FOPP had it going very cheaply recently in a thread on another boarrd.

Read the David Byrne How Music Works which came out around the same time at the beginning of the year which was pretty great too.

Must get hold of this now.

Diverting the thread, a little tiny bit; I've finally got myself a copy of 'Hell Bent For Leather' by Seb Hunter.

Once that Morrissey book's done with his will be getting a go. The sneak peeks I've taken ahead of a proper read have whetted my appetite immensely.

Hopefully, a forthcoming birfdee will soon have me sorted for something from the gnostic hooligan fiction genre, too.

Yes, a friend was clearly angry that it was available for £5 in Fopp, said it was worth a lot more. Admittedly its in that oversized paperback format they seem to do in lieu of a hardback. Never seem to be popular. Anyway will buy this weekend.
