Cardinal lp RSD release
Apr 22, 2014, 07:50
i had the self titled cardinal cd ages ago when i came out. For whatever reason i sold it at some point for something else. It was released for the first time ever on vinyl this past record store day. I ended up getting it and its quite good. A cd was also released with the vinyl and the vinyl was colored yellow. As everything seems to get classified this release is generally thought of as chamber pop. I don't think i really own anything else that is branded as such. Can anyone enlighten me on some good music from this genre? If you like the Cardinal release i would stress that it is worth getting.

I have an oldish re-issue of the Cardinal album on CD which has a mound of extra tracks (ep tracks, b-sides, demos etc including a really good version of Love's Willow Willow). It's a great album and totally at odds with the alternative scene of the time (early/mid 90s), hence its status as a somewhat lost classic.
In terms of contemporaneous releases, I guess you should probably track down Eric Matthews's post Cardinal solo releases (It's Heavy In Here and The Lateness Of The Hour are similarly baroque pop). Richard Davies pre-Cardinals stuff with The Moles is more garage-rock with psychedelic elements - I guess it was Eric that brought the chamber to the room.
Some Belle & Sebastian releases have a similar vibe (If You're Feeling Sinister & Fold Your Hands Child contain several tunes in this vein but they're not to everyone's taste and you'd have to pick your way through a bit of jangly/lightweight indie pop). Youtube Seeing Other People, The Model, & Jonathan David by B&S for examples but not 100% indicative of their overall style.

But if you like the Cardinal album, moving back in time you should definitely go for The Zombies' Odessey & Oracle (Eric's voice is a dead ringer for Colin Blunstone) and get the two Left Banke albums (Pretty Balerina/Walk Away Renee and Too). Absolute musts if you like that whole baroque/chamber pop thing!

Absolutely! I'd second both of those recommendations without reservation, and add that the Bee Gees' stakes its flag in similar territory, as does Emitt Rhodes' "American Dream". Michael Brown's post-Left Banke project Montage is worth a punt too, even if it's not quite up to his previous group's standards.

Meanwhile, if you're not averse to a dash of electronica with your baroque pop, there's Caribou's "Andorra" from 2007, which features a song named "Desiree" in obvious homage to the Left Banke track of the same name, even though it's a totally different song.

Yes, forgot the Montage album. Songwise it does more or less match the quality of Left Banke's first album, I think it's only really let down in the vocal department as Bob Steurer's vocals are fairly weak compared to the Left Banke's Steve Martin, but from what I seem to remember, the group were basically a garage band that Michael Brown hitched up with and took creative control of following his departure from The Left Banke.
It doesn't help that they re-recorded Desiree & Men Are Building Sand which are notably inferior to the LB versions (though LB's version of Men Are Building Sand was unreleased at that point) and there are a couple of bubblegummy clunkers on there too.
That said, I Shall Call Her Mary, Grand Pianist, Tinsel & Ivy and My Love are well worth the price of admission.

And good call on Bee Gees too, the first 3 albums (1st, Horizontal, Idea) are more towards The Beatles/Moodies style of orchestral/Mellotron pop-psych but Odessa is a sprawling (and rather odd in some places) baroque masterpiece.

you know i was not sure whether what people refer to as "chamber pop" was the same as "baroque pop" so i didn't mention it. I have the left banke material including the cd "there's gonna be a storm" which is one of the best compilations of all time. I also have the first Montage album downloaded. Anytime the word "baroque pop" comes up musically i pay attention.

That Left Banke comp is real hard to get these days too. It certainly blew my mind and melted my heart and all the more surprisingly as I was in the throws of an intense garage-rock phase at the time.
I've also read that Ars Nova's first album is in a similar vein - I've only heard Fields Of People (which I checked out after hearing The Move's elongated version from Shazam - which does feature mightly proto-Sabs riffing on the choruses). It's definitely baroque in feel but I'd Youtube it first as the vocals may be a little mock-courtly for some tastes.
