I have not been to many of late (combination of tinnitus and raising small children) but loads since early eighties. So many but I'll try to pick most memorable.

Restricted Code / Altered Images - Custom House Quay, Glasgow Summer 1980. My first ever gig - this was before Altered Images even released Dead Pop Stars never mind become a household name. Restricted Code were still to release their 2 singles for Pop Aural and record 2 Peel Sessions. If I had my way I would have Restricted Code a household name and Altered Images sink into obscurity.

Public Image Ltd - Glasgow Apollo 16 Nov 1983. My first proper gig. PIL were now Johnny Rotten and session musicians. It felt they'd been around for ages but really in the scheme of the things it was young days - 30 years on they are still playing. But what a song to welcome me into the world of gigs - "you never listened to a word that I said ... etc"

The Damned - Glasgow Penthouse 28 Dec 1983. My second gig - just before Sensible left.

Smiths - Glasgow Barrowlands 25 Sep 1985 - Meat Is Murder tour - wow! Saw them the following year same venue on Queen Is Dead tour.

Various "punk" gigs at the Grey Lodge, Dundee 1987. Especially the Apostles who did not play but showed slides to a bemused punk audience.

Gong / Daevid Allen - various Glasgow / Edinburgh gigs 1990-93.

American Music Club - Edinburgh Venue 26 Jan 1991. First of many AMC / Eitzel gigs - this was so loose, Eitzel's banter in between songs, that sound, the emotions, the laughs and that pedal steel!

Lee Scratch Perry - Glasgow Barrowlands Summer 2000. I don't do much reggae but this was awesome - terrific sound, band, chemistry. Went to see him a few times since but nothing on this.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Glasgow ABC 2005. Who would believe it? I actually saw them.

Flaming Lips - Edinburgh 2006. The bubbles, the balloons, a musical celebration.

Mike Heron and friends - Edinburgh Record Store Day 2013. "A Very Cellular Song" in a tiny pub in Stockbridge. Awesome!

Suicide supporting the Banshees, forgot that one, had the curtain falling down halfway through the Banshees set, they were far better than I expected

also forgot the marching band at Faust, there was Ironing at the Manchester show IIRC, and support from Ectogram

I saw Iggy in 2011 as well, Mrs Elf wanted to see Iggy so I went along not really expecting much, soon as the first note of Raw Power went out I went all goosebumps and thought Iggy - Raw Power FUUUUCCCCKKKKKKKKK YEAAAHHHH!! amazing show

Neil Young doing Day In A Life when Paul McCartney came on stage was another OOF! moment, shivers in the spine stuff

Wow! You saw The Apostles? I'm incredibly jealous! I worked with the band on one of their e.p.s but never saw them live in any format - even for a slideshow : )

Infact it was more projection film with soundtrack music. They didn't play live much at all. I did see them in 1990ish in Edinburgh twice ass Academy 23 and they actually played.

What E.P. was it you worked with them?

It's the kind of arty thing the Apostles would do to annoy the punks. I have a tape of Academy 23 but didn't see them, either.

It was the 7th ep I was on (I think!) - I played bass in a band called The Joy of Living and we did some stuff together. Andy and Dave - despite their reputations - are lovely blokes.

Just remembered this one, which didn't seem sensational at the time, but probably was: The Stone Roses at the Moonlight Club in the mid-80s (ish). Pete Townsend came on and played guitar on a few songs. I wasn't there to see the Roses (hadn't even heard of em), I was 17 and knew everything and refused to be impressed by the fact that I was seeing a rock legend for a couple of quid in a sweaty little club.

Mile Davis - Ottawa Arts Centre ( around 1988 )

Patti Smith & Thee Silver Mount Zion (secret show 2007)- Ukrainian Federation
She read poetry, the band improvised. Some really magical moments, plus it's a tiny venue.

Billy Bragg & The Beatnigs Porter Hall (198?)..notable for the Beatnigs who terrified the audience with a circular saw shooting sparks off of sheet metal. Also one of the band members was using car wheels for percussion smashed his thumb. They were fantastic (so was Billy though)

Jonathan Richman - Ottawa 1990.. memorable because the NDP (socialist leaning) won a provincial election that night and the mood was just incredibly positive. IT was a small crowd so he made us move out seats up closer to the stage - such an incredible performer.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - 2011 Montreal (I attended 2 shows)

The Gruesomes opening for The Meat Puppets - Ottawa late 80's... memorable cos The Gruesomes (a Montreal garage band) did a Scoobie Doo skit before their set.

Oh and ME! ..
In 2007 I picked up a guitar and played for publicly for the first time in 20 years, at an open mic called Poetry Plus. Technically they were (baddish) poems with guitar, but it was invigorating. The nice bonus was that the McGarrigle sisters were there, and came to me afterwards to tell me the liked it.

Kudos.

Actually, we should have an HH Muzos' Sensational Gigs thread. Good and otherwise.

I was taking stills at both the Urban Sax concerts. I remember my new girlfriend (now wife) fainting in the crowd.
There were so many great gigs to choose from around that time. At least a couple a week or whatever one had money for. I used to take photos, maybe they would jog my memory.
