Hmmm. The first sexing up I recall from the classical side of the industry was for the now totally forgotten Ofra Harnoy, a cellist of average talent but above-average aesthetic charm whom RCA pushed big time in the 80's. And she made the front cover of 'Gramophone' too, as did the equally eye-catching Lebeque sisters. Since then it's been hottie-a-go-go from both sexes, with nary a modicum of memorable artistry in evidence.

Of course, none of this would matter jack shit if the great record buying public weren't so vulnerable to all such hype. I guess you only have to compare how many people buy Celibidache CD's against those who buy Katherine Jenkins CD's to work that out. Not that I would presume to question the good taste of the latter. Not much.

Thanks for the Nils, Fitter ;)

The tracks seem to be in reverse order though, Jailbait first and Cry Tough last!

Whatever became of Vanessa Mae? She seemed to be all over the place awhile back. Shame she never did that tutorial DVD I suggested "Fiddling With..." (or "Fiddle with me")

I've never written a review that was paid for in such a way - but a band I know who are still going had their album reviewed some years back in Melody Maker (I think).

The reviewer actually gave them 9 out of 10 - but the editor downgraded it to 8 because the band (who owned their own label) didn't advertise it in the paper.

That might explain why you sometimes see a review that seems to be glowing with praise but, if the mag uses a scoring system, the album gets given a 6/10 or somesuch. Same applies to slag offs that end up with a seemingly reasonable score. Hmmmm
