I've never been told outright that 'no advert = no review', but it's been strongly hinted at and has proven that way

Even worse is when you DO pay for adverts and the magazine continue to ignore your releases ... no names

I know what you mean about IRR vs Gramophone. I still have a soft spot for both.

What concerns me most in the Classical world (and in book publishing)is the clear policy of signing artists as much on their image as on their talent. Seems that if the record company can't imagine that an audience will want to either be you or **** you then you can forget it. Nothing new there in a way but usually that kind of image grooming in classical followed the establishment of talent not the other way round. Pogorelic is hte first pin-up signing I can remember but he could really play. Most of my classical vinyl from the 60 and 70s doesn't have anyone on the cover!

That said I was the publicist for a couple of years for the specialist classical arm of a major in the late 80s and was never asked for marketing money to be spent in return for coverage for the records I was working. Perhaps it was going on at a different level but I was under the impression that in the specialist area it was fairly straight-up. Of course that is nearly 25 years ago and I had stopped doing PR by 1991.

Can't say that doesn't irritate but I guess if you want a clean game then you have to take it both ways. I stopped advertising in a well known "roots" publication for that very reason. Last successful record I was involved in releasing we spent nothing on print advertising or on-line gubbins. Just a few quid with Amazon and the work of a passionate and committed publicist. The rest was word of mouth and the fact that the artist (who is American) did numerous tours and played London something like 15 times in three years. They understood the need to not just show up once a year.

I think what you get up to with your hens should remain private.

Right. My next 6 months of weekly Soundtrack threads are up for sale at a very reasonable rate...

I used to feel a bit embarrassed when I saw an advert on the same spread as the favourable review. I used to think the publishers were almost trying to draw attention to it. In fact, I still feel that when I see it happening all these years later in order magazines with other record companies advertising some new album directly opposite (or just one indiscrete) page away from the big five star review,

Per review? OK, as long as they're fresh and free range. Send the CD and a few suggested words to help me along the way. Chuck in some cash and I'll increase the word count and exclamation marks.

That's a bit different though. I have certainly had calls from ad reps that go "such and such journalist loved your album, the review is brilliant, can you take an ad?". Sometimes I did, more often I didn't. Not sure it ever counted for or against me. That's not the same as blatantly selling a review and making that part of your rate-card.
