Apocalypse – Bill Callahan
Just a great collection of songs.

Sniper - Marc Hurtado & Alan Vega
I wasn’t sure about this at first, but then I guess Al isn’t known for his hooks these days! It’s growing on me though and Saturn Drive Duplex has a strange beauty about it. Sacrifice has great Vega vocs, too. There’s real feeling there.

Dub Housing – Pere Ubu
Especially Ubu Dance Party.

Then & Now – The Who
I shouldn’t grumble cos it only cost a few quid, but I was a bit gutted when I realised those early 70’s non-lp singles Let’s See Action and Join Together weren’t included. Pale Blue Eyes is a great song for sure, but if I wanted it on cd I’d buy Who’s Next (and indeed have). That said I haven’t heard Tommy in a long time so it was good to hear the ‘Listening To You’ bit which I think is Townshend’s finest ever melody. What happened to PT’s muse though? Who Are You seems a lot of fuss about nothing and You Better You Bet is a two and a half minute pop song dragged out to twice the length because Pete does ‘epic’, you know. And I haven’t bothered playing the two recent tracks a second time yet. I just go back and listen to The Who try and fulfil their Beatle dreams on the wonderful the Kids Are Alright (which apparently only reached a lowly 44 in the UK Hit Parade!) and the I Can See For Miles which is pretty much as good as it gets for me.

Also...
Dead Songs – Big Blood
Proxima – Black Tempest
Dead Legs & Alibi’s - Dark Captain
We Love the City – Hefner
Things We Lost In The Fire – Low
In Nightfall – Seabuckethorn
The Eternal – Sonic Youth
Forth – The Verve

Must check out the new Dark Captain release myself. Hope it compares fsvourably with the excellent Miracle Kicker.

As for Hurtado / Vega - thanks for the heads up, duly ordered.

If you like Miracle Kicker then I'm pretty sure you'll like this one too, Bubbs.

If I’m being totally honest I was hoping that they might venture into the more rhythmic direction that was hinted at on the Can-like remix on the interim ep they released in 2009 - I think you really liked that track, too.

But they seem to have gone for more of the same - quality songs, hushed vocals and harmonies. But I’m really not complaining, because from listen one you know that the so-called ‘difficult second album’ syndrome is not going to apply here. And it gets better with further listens.

Bong - Beyond ancient space (keep hearing new things, like the Ash Ra Tempel guitar sound during the last track)
Ash Ra Tempel - s/t/1st: Hadn't listened to this in ages, glorious
Emeralds - Does it look like I'm here?: Been enjoying this - perhaps a bit too much going on at times in some of the tracks for me, but it's getting repeat plays so a good sign.
Barn Owl - Lost in the Glare: lovely desert rock (in the UK in November, certainly playing at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in London)
Earthling Society - Stations of the Ghost: Finally got round to getting this after various HHers were reporting good things about it - and yes another that's been on repeat a lot this week. Nice and atmospheric with good tunes.

I think that's probably it as most of those have been on repeat on the commute to work and in the evenings. Visionary soundtracks of our lives:
Tonight: White Hills & Eternal Tapestry at Corsica studios
Weds: A documentary about Pentagram (on as part of the London Film Festival)
