Y'know - I've seen clips from that show and they're so ideologically unacceptable it's almost surreal. But to put it in context...

A few weeks ago at work I stumbled accidentally upon a book of sheet music - dating from 1910 - called "Francis & Day's Book of Coon Carols".

The lead song ? "I'm Just A Coon".

and I quote the first verse in full...

"My gal she took a notion against the coloured race
She said were she to marry me, I'd have to change my face
She said that if she wed me, that she'd regret it soon
How I wish I were a white man, instead of just a coon".

Dear God.

I think it's important to keep records of that kind of stuff though, so people can learn from past mistakes.

Excuse me whilst i pick my jaw up off the floor. Not that i should be that surprised that that kinda shit was considered to be socially acceptable in a nominally Xtian country where everyone's supposed to be equal in the eyes of god as hypocrisy's been a forte of humankind since written history began.

Interesting to see how overt ignorant prejudice such as that, despite massive changes in societys values between 1910 and 1960, eventually can morph into something more casual but nearly every bit as racist though.
