Well I already knew the hit record in England on my birthday was "Sunny Afternoon" by the Kinks (the American hit being the less interesting "Strangers in the Night" by Frank Sinatra of course, not to mention the hit album was another elevator-music 'classic' the Sound of Music...) But what I didn't know is that I share a birthday with Peter Murphy from Bauhaus(!) How about that...

Eek, i knew it was gonna be bad but not this bad.... The Number 1 single was: Frankie Vaughan - "Tower Of Strength" and it gets worse... The Number 1 album was: George Mitchell Minstrels - "Another Black And White Minstrel Show" I suppose it was always gonna be a pile of poo being the week before Xmas ! As for the shared birthdays, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top is the only name of note.

Oi cheeky ! I'm not quite Methuselah yet. I was gonna hazard a guess that the Minstrel shows died a death on British TV in the 60's, but no, check this out... http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/535195/index.html Almost unbelievably in this day and age, the show had an audience of up to 18 million or a third of the population of the country.

Y'know - I've seen clips from that show and they're so ideologically unacceptable it's almost surreal. But to put it in context... A few weeks ago at work I stumbled accidentally upon a book of sheet music - dating from 1910 - called "Francis & Day's Book of Coon Carols". The lead song ? "I'm Just A Coon". and I quote the first verse in full... "My gal she took a notion against the coloured race She said were she to marry me, I'd have to change my face She said that if she wed me, that she'd regret it soon How I wish I were a white man, instead of just a coon". Dear God. I think it's important to keep records of that kind of stuff though, so people can learn from past mistakes.

Possibly the most perfectly titled album ever. "Val Doonican Rocks But Gently". I feel that this has determined aspects of my character more than the stars or planets. I now understand my fatal attraction to gently rocking sounds. Also my habit of gently rocking back and forth to the sounds of Val Doonican.
