Yoko Ono: Yay Or NaY?
Jan 11, 2009, 21:36
I was glad to see Julian give Yoko a nod, I always felt she was under rated, and a target of misogyny and Beatle gripes. I realize she also is not everyone's cup of tea. I prefer her Apple era stuff, haven't really followed her later stuff. In my vinyl sifting even as late as now I have come across many unopened/still sealed copies of her work. She enjoyed some vindication during punk and postpunk.

So what are your feelings, love, hate, ambivalence?

I just heard disc one of ONOBOX (Rhino's advertising slogan was apparently "Not so bad as you might think") and really, really dug it. Lots of reverb, which makes her voice almost a synth- or kaospad-like tone generator. Good headphone space-out music. On the intense side, but not as grating as the live stuff I've heard - which I also enjoy, but in a different way, at different times, and probably not as often.

She broke up the Beatles? Bull.

Also I've been enjoying her various global-scale peace-oriented art projects. Who knows how much if any good it does, but I got a really good feeling from the wish-tree installation we checked out in the L.A. area. Any major public thang promoting universal good wishes is alright in my book, as is whoever calls it into being.

So - proyoko

FZ regarded her contribution to the Mothers gig a 'minor eternity'.

I like some of her work, but some is shite. I like 'Sofahead' by the bonzo's.

1st yoko plastic ono band LP, "fly", side 2 of "live peace" + "life w/ the lions" = magical, + also best thing anyone in the beatles ever did, IMHO ... everything else i ever heard by her = crap (ok, "2 virgins" is kinda funny, in an unbearable way)
ah, i like "listen the snow is falling" too

Some of the 80's stuff palls a bit - "Approximately Infinite Universe" is brilliant - "Rising" was a great return to form.

Overall - a big yay from me.
