For roughly six years Arista records supported some serious avant garde work, then pulled the plug. This stuff has been out of print for years: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=242-MD-CD

oh wow, that looks interesting. Braxton sems a fascinating character, from the little I've heard of his music. Better not let Vybik see it though, it is j*zz...

For me he's simply the best composer alive, a stunning creative force mixing free jazz leanings with avant garde sensibilities.

I bought this set (at great expense, especially considering the unavoidable import duty as there's no UK distributor) five years ago. All I can say to anyone interested is: do the same, while you still can. Mosaics rarely stay in the catalogue this long. They've a very tempting Henry Threadgill set out as well.

I really like his early work for the Byg label, also the two Creative Construction Company albums are fab if you can find 'em. The excellent webzine BigO quite regularly posts Braxton concerts for download, here are a few, I'm sure there are others - http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=2175 http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=312 http://bigozine2.com/roio/?p=344

There's a good introduction to Braxton in Val Wilmer's "As Serious As Your Life" if you can dig a copy out of your local library (I assume it is long out of print). I loved exploring this music in the early 80s. Seemed as good an anecdote to what was happening to Post Punk as any. Now I kind of wonder whether a lot of this music was about disowning the listener and falling down the same rabbit hole as the Marxist academics who disappeared into forms of critical analysis almost designed to have no readers other than their peers. That said when this music hits it really hits and labels are irrelevant.

Braxton is astonishingly prolific, and very consistent along all his records and concerts.
