The Smiths. Most influencial band ever?
Jul 29, 2008, 17:00
Never mind the ill-founded notion that The Clash are the best band ever. I think by the many comments they don't even win the best punk band ever!
... however, plagiarism is everything, and I have borrowed the title for an equally contentious thread ...

Every so often a group comes along that attempts to re-write the history of music ... my view is that Mozza and co were one such group. Decent success in the singles charts, and good selling albums, but nothing brilliant ... yet their legacy is so much more.

Quote from Wikipedia ...
"Critics have called them one of the most important alternative rock bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s, and the group has had major influence on subsequent artists. Morrissey's lovelorn tales of alienation found an audience amongst youth culture bored by the ubiquitous synthesizer-pop bands of the early 1980s, while Marr's complex melodies helped return guitar-based music to popularity."

You even love the Moz or hate him, but either way, you know a lot about him, and have listened to his music ... and probably entered many an arguement about him. Indifference is not a trait associated to people when they speak about him.

So why is that?
Was it all a big con by Rough Trade to sell records?
Is it as simple as that?
... and are they the most influential band ever?
