I hated "Born In The USA" even at the time - as an ambivalent protest song which celebrates all that's good and great about America whilst implicitly condemning the Reagan / Bush regime I think Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World" is a much better example. I do like Springsteen's more stripped-down acoustic stuff like "The River", "Nebraska" and "Tom Joad", though.

The Replacement and Springsteen? Never thought of them in the same breath myself - they seemed to me to have more in common with Big Star or the Faces (albeit with better tunes than the latter), but listening to some of the slower songs on "All Shook Down", you could be right I suppose.

Good morning Popel Vooje!

Yeah, I never liked the song 'Born in the USA,' much as a song, though it never deserved the criticism it got from those who misunderstood it as a patriotic, flag-waving anthem. Everyone would probably agree it's his weakest album too, though it has its moments. As for The Replacements, I think you're right in the influences you mention- and 'Exile' era Stones, of course- but Springsteen is in there too, if just as someone who was a contemporary, albeit right in the mainstream, doing his own take on classic garage band rock n' roll in the 80s when everyone else was using synthesisers (in the pop charts) or going in a more folk rock direction (REM, the Paisley Underground groups). All those alt country / roots rock bands who came later seem to respect Springsteen, too, so I think he has a credibility that moves him a bit closer to that scene and away from the dreaded likes of John Cougar Mellencamp, Bryan Adams, Billy Joel etc.

Hope you're well,

Hunter

Oh no, Machinery Elf, in your avatar it is apparent you have been afflicted withy what is known as 'Van Der Graff Syndrome'. Yes, it is triangular in nature and, no, I am sorry, there is no cure.

I think modern day (crap) westerberg has more in common with Springsteen than the Mats but I don't mean to criticize the Boss, I like some of his stuff too, NOT 'Born in the USA', even if it was an anti-Regan song.

Springsteen was a huge Alan Vega/Suicide fan which

influenced 'Nebraska'.

There is also a rockabilly sessions/outtakes of "The River", at that time Springsteen was listening to Clash, Gene Vincent, Robert Gordon, Eddie Cochran, Alan Vega, etc.

Also "Mansions on The Hill" is worth a read, Jon Landau practiced his techniques with MC5 before Springsteen.

mIKE Apfel Springsteen's First Manager/producer used the money not

paid to Sir Lord Baltimore to float Springsteen's first Lp.

I bought Born to Run when I was 16 and loved it, but never really liked much since. I bought Darkness... but it didn't do a lot for me. Maybe it was cos my copy sounded quite murky, but then again the tunes weren't exactly memorable either IMO.

But Born In The USA? Hated it!

And yes, I probably missed the point, because I just saw a sweaty man in a white t-shirt and headband yelling the title and lots of screaming Americans in the audience punching the air. It might have been raucous, but it was tuneless drivel. And so I switched off and didn't listen.

Now I'm sorry I missed the point, but if someone wants to deliver a message they should at least make it listenable, and BITUSA was anything but to these ears. God, I hate that song!!
