...coming your way on September 11th. Dear All Here is the press release for the forthcoming CD "The Final Cuts", which is being released via Demon/Edsel. ---------------------------------------------------------- Following the publication in 2002 of a newspaper story about Rolan Bolan, son of Marc Bolan and Gloria Jones, Rolan received an unusual phone call. A former employee of AIR Studios in central London asked whether he would like to meet her so that she could give him some lost master tapes of his father's that she had kept carefully at home in Weston-Super-Mare following the closure of the Oxford Street recording facility in 1989, she had kept them carefully at her home in Weston-Super-Mare, Avon, in southwest England until such time as she was able to give them to Bolan's son. To Rolan's delight, the tapes revealed recordings made from October 1976 to April 1977, not only by his father and T. Rex, but also duets featuring both of his parents. These included the full session for the recording of the Phil Spector classic, "To Know You Is To Love You", and previously unheard versions of "Tame My Tiger" (a b-side to the final T.Rex single). To everyone's surprise and delight, Gloria was featured as lead vocalist on the "Tiger" out-takes. Rolan has now kindly made these tapes available for this release, thirty years after their original recording. Together they make up the bulk of the final recorded studio work from the final twelve months of Marc Bolan's life. With the addition of four tracks contributed by Thunderwing Productions Ltd, recorded at Decibel Studios in Stamford Hill in April 1977, the picture is almost complete. For the first time, we are able to enjoy and understand more fully in context the direction in which Marc Bolan's music may have been heading as he approached his thirties. Seven of the twelve songs on this CD were not released during Bolan's lifetime. It will never be known whether or not they would have seen the light of day, had tragedy not struck in September 1977, but by including them here, in master-tape clarity, we hope to give a genuine representation of the final examples of Marc's enduring mastery of his craft. The handsomely packaged and slipcased album, with full track-by-track annotation and contemporary previously unpublished photographs by Barry Plummer, will be released on 11th September 2006. TRACKLISTING Hot George / Love & The Foxey Boy / Celebrate Summer / Love Drunk / Write Me A Song / Mellow Love / Dandy In The Underworld / Crimson Moon / To Know You Is To Love You / Tame My Tiger / Shy Boy / 20th Century Baby Extended Play: Tame My Tiger [Gloria Jones vocal] / Mellow Love [alternate version] / To Know You Is To Love You [instrumental] ---------------------------------------------------------- All tracks are mixed directly from master tapes and nothing has been added posthumously to the recordings.

I sort of hope Bolan was moving away from the plodalong sessionist backing bands and gettting into something more exciting. The punky rhythm guitar parts on the Marc TV show versions of old hits certainly point that way. Then there was the wild-eyed artrock tracks done with Bowie for the Marc Show, 'Sitting Next To You' and 'Madman'. Does anyone here have the CDs of those September 77 sessions with Bowie? I know there are incomplete and bad quality versions around, but apparently there are two top quality all takes CDs, 'Marc Bolan With David Bowie And Other Friends' (Bolan Collectors Series MBCS102) and 'The Last Sessions'. I'd do all manner of ungodly things for a copy. Incidentally, I've stuck a version of Madman by Cuddly Toys up on my MP3 blog http://dustonthestylus.blogspot.com/2006/06/cuddly-toys-madman.html

Hot George / Love & The Foxey Boy / Celebrate Summer / Love Drunk / Write Me A Song / Mellow Love / Dandy In The Underworld / Crimson Moon / To Know You Is To Love You / Tame My Tiger / Shy Boy / 20th Century Baby Extended Play: Tame My Tiger [Gloria Jones vocal] / Mellow Love [alternate version] / To Know You Is To Love You [instrumental] Hmmm... I've heard and have previously owned versions of things like 'Shy Boy', 'Mellow Love' 'Love Drunk' and 'Foxy Boy' a while back and thought them pretty dull, to be honest. In fact I also have versions of everything in this list. I'd be most interested to hear alternative takes on 'Tame My Tiger', Dandy In The Underworld' (though I have a couple already) and 'Celebrate Summer'. BTW, A high pitched wailing vocalist called Gardenia was credited for singing on the released version of 'Tame My Tiger' was that actually Gloria Jones?

I've got a Bolan cdr called The Complete Sessions with a Bolan/Roy Wood session from 1976, and the Bolan/Bowie one with 5 versions of Sleeping Next To You (Sleeping/Standing/Sitting - same song!), 3 Madman's and a 'Jam'. Don't think they were brilliant quality and unfortunately I just tried to play it and it was playing up. Will see what I can do if you wanna drop me a line... Incidentaly, Sean was the singer in The Cuddly Toys (and Raped as they were unfortunately called initially). I remember him at Bolans funeral in a black blazer with johnnies pinned all over it! He was dressed even more outrageously for the Bolanites Unite party that was held for what would have been Bolan's 30th birthday a couple of weeks later and which had been planned before he died (there was a very rumour strong rumour that he had intended turning up). I only met him those two times, but he seemed a very friendly bloke. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago now. But Madman was a great single. I always thought it sounded more like Bowie than Bolan, but my mum heard it playing one day and said "This sounds like T.Rex". Well, after years of brainwashing, I guess her finger was on the pulse! ; )

>Hmmm... I've heard and have previously owned versions of things like 'Shy >Boy', 'Mellow Love' 'Love Drunk' and 'Foxy Boy' a while back and thought them >pretty dull, to be honest. In fact I also have versions of everything in this list. They were on the posthumous Billy Super Duper LP, with added extra production c/o of the fan club of the time. Think they've been released again without the production, but off the top of my head can't think where. Still, these sound like proper quality jobs - the email came from the same folk who released the excellent re-mastered Born to Boogie dvd, and the recent T.Rex On TV dvd. Both were excellent jobs, so I'm hopeful that this will be a decent job. I like those songs - punk had inspired Bolan to get back to his roots, though as his roots were in early rock'n'roll I guess the influence is more elvis than the Pistols. >BTW, A high pitched wailing vocalist called Gardenia was credited for singing on >the released version of 'Tame My Tiger' was that actually Gloria Jones? Well it sounds like Gloria to me!! ; )

Apparently Bolan wasn't too forthcoming on settling studio bills and a lot of tapes were held onto until payment arrived. Many were forgotten about...
