Apparently, when the Spanish first arrived here a few hundred years ago, they found a very large number of native villages in the LA area. The highest density in all USA it turns out. In their records they remarked on the bad air due to all the camp fires trapped by the mountains and the inversion layer. They named it "The Bay of the Smokes". The native villages had a very easy going lifestyle and very few wars. No reports of surfing though.
