From the land of screw them for compensation.
I heard on the radio a while back , that a woman dying of lung cancer was awarded $300 million in compensation by a tobacco company.
Thats a lot of money presumably going to her surviving family.
Also a good cut for her lawyers.
I've managed to cut down to one cig at lunch on a shoot day.

Entering the school through a fire door? Disgusting! Drinking fizzy drinks? Heretical!

I was physically manhandled for using the wrong computer in an internet cafe the night before writing this message, so right now i've got issues with control freaks. Of course i was guilty even though i didn't start it so therefore i don't think leaving school gets you away from control freaks. We are run by them so we will copy them. That's the way it seems to be. It's a shame cos i spent a lot of time in India surrendering. I feel sorry for anyone who has to be controlling. Look at Robert Mugabe as an example of how far you can take it.

I know i've gone off on a bit of a tangeant but my point is that the Dalai Lama won't condemn you for coming to his lectures through the exit rather than the entrance. All he'll want is that you understand his words of wisdom, and if you have a fizzy drink in your hand he won't make you stay for 2 hours when everyone's gone for the soul purpose of punishment!

I hope the schoolgirl wins the case.

I was in trouble a lot during my last years at school for a variety of reasons (most of the time for a lot worse things than sipping fizzy drink and using the wrong door). So in that age-old conflict between teacher and school kid, my sympathies will always tend to be with the kid, all other things being equal.

And yes, whilst detention for a trivial transgression can be seen as "false imprisonment" in a very real sense; and whilst it can - at times - be abused by teachers; i find myself shying away from the idea of pupils sueing their schools over it.

I don't have any coherent reasoning, and i know i'm naive in my hope that society can be self-correcting and self-governing without the constant need for litigation; but i'm just not sure legal action over detention is the right way for society to be going.

Nah! give her the birch. Also there shouldn't be such things as sixth form or universities. Anyone between the ages of 16 to 25 should be put in the army. Don't teach 'em anything just have them marching around all the time. They should learn discipline and not have any funny ideas of self expression.

the problem is that society seems no longer to be able to 'self-correct'...if so, the kid would have had more respect for the teacher, & the parents would not side with the kid, but would rather reinforce the attempt at respect for authority by a 'punishment' of their own, or at least by resisting the urge to sue

I got the belt for smiling too, and I'm not even Catholic. It did me the world of good though, I haven't smiled since.
My dad was a teacher, and he got out his strap last week to show my nephew - so count your blessings. Your teacher was never too sadistic in case the parents complained - when its your dad you pray for the day Childline gets invented.
