Tip of the Month: Non Payment of Fines
Nov 11, 2002, 21:24
I think I deserve a kiss for this beauty, remember where you got your get of jail free card ;-)

Once you refuse to pay your court fine one of two warrants is issued for you. If it is an inquiry warrant then you are taken to prision instead of police cells. However, prisons don't release at the weekend and can't hold you longer than whatever you have been sentenced to.

So, say you are fined £150, can't pay and won't pay and a warrant is issued for your arrest. You are given 3 days inside. You hand yourself in on the Friday morning, you are taken to prison for an hour, they can't hold you until Monday and you get released after an hour or so.
The trick is to check in your local court how long people are sentenced for for whatever amount of fine you are avoiding. If you expect to get 4 days hand yourself in on the Thursday and get released on the Friday, etc, in other words two days off your sentence whatever your sentence is. 3 days for £150-£200 on a first offence seems the going rate in Scotland. I take it this is the same in England but if anyone can confirm that I'll be grateful.

There is another solution available to those who have peep holes and front doors with no glass in them. When they come round with the warrant, don't answer the door. I did this twice last year when I was fined for not having the right ticket on a train, and they've since written off the fine completely without me having been arrested or paid a penny.
