"A History of Loneliness" - John Boyne

I'm just coming to the end of this book I picked up by chance in my local library. For anyone wanting an insight in what happened to the Catholic church in Ireland I'd say this is an essential read. Joseph O'Connor describes it as 'brave, righteously angry and stunning'. Corruption inside the Vatican is also given an airing - it's compelling and very readable. Highly recommended.

The thing that makes me most angry is the Vatican's past support for Pinochet.

I mentioned the book not to start a Catholic bashing thread as I know good people who are Catholics - rather that this particular novel is thoroughly researched, written with some insight from the perspective of a 'non-offending' middle aged priest. Its about how an unspoken conspiracy of silence can make the innocent also guilty and how the perpetrators of sexual crimes against children have often been victims of abuse themselves. One of those books you don't forget quickly.
