TTIP dystopian craziness
Sep 03, 2014, 07:26
This is hardly breaking news but I don't see it on this forum? and we were talking about it at work yesterday

You couldn't make it up. It's like the ultimate capitalist dystopia, with negotiations in secret between corporations and the EU/US. One crazy result is corporations will be able to sue governments for loss of profit (as a result of imposing laws that protect the environment or that might support workers' rights, basically). Phillip Morris is currently sueing Australia over tobacco packaging rules under a similar trade agreement.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea. Truly shocking, but sadly not at all surprising.

There is a 38 Degrees campaign running regarding this very craziness. It's just a click away, click away etc

Thank you. That's got a very clear video too.

I don't really understand why countries would want to be signed up to such a thing given the potential sueing issue - which will take place in some kind of arbitration court which isn't even the international courts, it's something outside of that. Which seems mad.

It's not like things haven't already happened as a result of similar agreements - fracking companies in canada (lone pine in quebec), which i think is ongoing at the moment?

Today's politicians are tomorrow's board members, lobbyists, consultants and er .... middle east peace envoys. They are feathering their beds and leaving someone else to clear up the mess.
