I read an intesting - and alarming - article in the paper the other day:

http://www.startribune.com/stOnLine/cgi-bin/article?thisSlug=0822AP-BUTTERFLIES-C&date=22-Aug-2000

...about biotech corn being grown in Iowa. Apparently one of the (not too surprising) problems they're encountering is that the corn's pollen drifts to other plants - in this case milkweed - and kills other unintended insect larvae. Certainly this is what people have been warning against, but it's nice to see that some real research is being done on it. Hopefully that will wake up some government regulators over here. Unfortunately, I suppose most people won't get too upset about insects dying - but if it ruined their lawns, that'd be a problem!

If we mess with our insects and plants, we will pay the price. I cannot believe that science refuses to bow out in the face of a fragile food-chain and eco-system. If 'aint broke don't fix it! Buggers.

But the bit that is broke is agriculture in Africa, and this is where the now-powerful genetic modificationists are tugging at our heart strings. They pledge that they will eliminate starvation with their blind-science wand. They're trying to get in by the backdoor, because they know as well as we all do that starvation is a political problem. If it was really seen by politicians as the global priority that it is, it could be easily eliminated. But their complacency is allowing these Big McGlobal Corp companies to introduce sudden alterations to the evolution of life on our planet.

Africa needs a stable political system, plenty of hydroculture, and a lot of love. If fact, we all do!
