What a Suprise

Over 100,000 searched under "anti-terrorist" powers, not ONE terrorism arrest...

Congratulations! You are our 100,000th suspect!

Maybe they came out with a girlie in a swimsuit and sash, a hamper, a season ticket to English Heritage and a complementary-kicking-and-night-in-the-cells combo.

But at least we can all sleep safely, secure in the knowledge that there's absolutely no racial bias involved. On the contrary:

Surely this is the police implementing a law incorrectly? Labour may have passed the law, but, if I understand it, stop and search was only supposed to be used if there were good grounds to suspect terrorism. If that is the case this is entirely a failure on the part of the police.

There's 2 ways of looking at it, but the police are controled by the government in my mind. They do, or are constrained by the law made by politicos. They do not make the law themselves and the distinction: The police uphold the law, the courts enforce the law is always at the forefront of my thinking.

If the police started to act autonomously, then there would be a battle to bring them, under control as we've seen what an out of control police force can do... fit-ups, wrongful arrests, corruption, killings etc, etc.

The control freakery of the Labour government gave the police, councils and many, many organisations the powers and rights to snoop on our citizens through using the 'Terrorist round every corner' scare tactic. That was the basis of biometric passports, ID cards, CCTV, facial recognition, police bullying tactics, electronic communications control and storage, vehicle tracking and population tracking.

I'm no Tory, but I reserve a special vitriolic hatred for Tony & Gordon's efforts...

I'd never have guessed!

From my point of view, as I tried to explain previously, the government pass the laws but the police implement them. It seems to me that in this case the law is just about OK (it seems fair enough to give the police the powers to search someone they seriously think is about to launch a terrorist attack), but has been implemented entirely incorrectly, and has been used as an excuse to search anyone they fancy.

:-) 'least I wear my heart on my sleeve.

Totally understand what you're saying, but I think there are insidious links that run very deep between them all on a political level. I fail to seperate them and think they have a common goal, and methods of approach.

I think the anti-terror laws that were brought in were not 'just' laws, I think they were entirely unjust and brought in on a false premise. Never done during IRA days, but them damn 'mooslims'..... I think they were brought in in order to give the police the very powers that you think they're mis-using! I would disband the ACPO right now too.

Yeah, you've got a point.

Y'know, after having some rather unpleasant disagreements with someone who will remain nameless, it is reassuring to me that you and I can disagree, discuss and consider quite contentious points, but remain civilised about it. Good on yer.
