After years of sending LGBT people back telling them to try not to be discovered, the UK has decided that persecution for sexual orientation is an asylum issue. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/jul/07/gay-asylum-seekers-rights-deportation

What with all the police brutality and persecution etc that goes on in the UK, I'm told, surely they'd be better off going back home? ;-) x

This is a slightly mad one - with all the tories 'tougher than Labour on asylum and immigration' stuff, coupled to their extensive record of homophobia, it seems against type to have made this ruling. Theresa May, who's voted homophobically in the Commons right up to the most recent opportunity, said she 'welcomed' the decision. Still, credit where it's due.

Wasn't this ruling something to do with a decision from the European Court of Human Rights or something, rather than simply coming from the coalition? I thought I heard that mentioned on the radio, but I could be wrong.

i hadn't heard that. It came from a Supreme Court ruling, though they may well be being influenced by Europe. Either way, it's a mad 'un that Theresa May's saying she's pleased about it.

They wouldn't have done it on their own initiative. It's been forced on them and they're clever and duplicitous enough to 'support' it to try and give them a humane face as they wage war on Mr & Mrs Average and the vulnerable. Bare faced bullshit of the highest order.

Absolutely...and at least Theresa May, has the balls to say that she has been persuaded to change her view on certain "gay issues" (I remember she was recently pressed on this on Question Time a month or so ago...)... I have a lot of faith in Theresa as Home Sec. and indeed asa political representative generally.
