A guy who has an opinion that is contradicted by an earlier opinion he presented, who can cite no references, 'believes' other 'experts' agree with him'.....

Civil liberties are the foundation of the whole American ethos (the progressive part of it, anyway). And the institution of marriage isn't at risk of further damage because more people want to marry, fer chrissakes. What an ass-backwards argument. We've got a fifty percent divorce rate now... and it's higher in those parts of the country that are more religious!

The old stereotype that gay people are 'promiscuous' is also a big WTF... if they want to settle down into stable relationships, isn't that a GOOD thing?

I must add; It's disturbing to me that many minorities that a mere forty years ago were fighting for their civil rights are now denying gay and lesbian couples the right to marry.

Ah, sorry.
To summarize, the guy is basically a self-proclaimed expert on why gay marriage will put the nail in the coffin of that institution. Like all of them, his assumptions are based on bigotry that's dolled up in pretentious language to sound like science.

I have yet to hear one convincing argument as to why allowing same sex couples to wed is a bad thing. There ARE good reasons to DEBATE marriage in individual cases (hetero or homosexual)... some ministers will marry a crusty old lech to a teenage girl without batting an eye, for example, or allow two completely immature kids to set up house.

What it all comes down to is consenting adults, which should be the final criteria. If two mature people want to form that bond, it shouldn't be anyone else's business. And a modern state that respects individual liberties MUST grant it.

Putting the question to voters is a load of crap, in my opinion. You could put a vote to the concept of giving minorities equal rights in some places and get a majority that would reject it, but it still wouldn't make it right. Some things transcend 'popular' opinion.

"Democracy is me and three muggers voting on who gets the contents of my wallet"

I forget who said thatt. I first thought this thread would be about the Chilcott enquiry. but no.

Anyway, proposition 8, wasnt it? The good people of California showed that they could be as small minded and bigoted as people anywhere.

California, like my home state of Massachusetts, is frequently misunderstood to be some kind of liberal bastion where everyone's progressive. It just ain't so.

That said, we do have legal same sex marriage here, not that a great many 'massholes' wouldn't overturn it given the chance.
