Councils Cutting Services
Dec 10, 2008, 09:51
Was sad to hear on the news today that Warwickshire Council were going to cut services to the elderly because of the credit crunch.

Never mind aid to finanical institutions, what about being able to live your final days in dignity.

Is this kinda thing happening anywhere else? Yet again it is the sector of society that most needs the help, that has help withdrawn.

We're losing libraries and leisure centres, because the council can't afford to keep the old buildings in repair. I suspect that some of the people speaking out loudest against the cuts are also the first to complain about rises in council tax, but there you go.

I certainly wouldn't complain if the council tax was raised in my area, and they pleged to do more. But I could stand the rise due to my individual circumstances others may not be able to. Your right though in saying some would protest at such proposals.

All sorts under threat in Bristol (for a long time actually). Services for adults with learning difficulties will probably take yet another hit, but it will be dressed up (again) as some positive step towards personal empowerment - the usual meaningless b*llocks that insults service users and staff with years of real experience and insight.

What, you mean like the personal empowerment of all those deliberately unemployed people that are going to be encouraged and empowered to get jobs just at the time when there aren't any jobs to get and who will be further empowered by losing their benefits if they don't get into one of these non-existent jobs....

Kind of.
What tends to happen is that services get closed down, and everyone who has committed years of their life to making them excellent will have insult added to injury by being told they are just institutionalising service users.
The service users will be told they can all do their own thing now (which they were doing via day services anyway) - except in reality those "choices" will simply not be there. And what services that are available will be provided by charities, ngo's etc, by poorly paid and poorly managed staff lacking experience and decent training.
Still, when did anyone with autism or downs ever complain effectively (the media and most of the public are not interested in this group)? And of course, the staff who help them will all be gagged, so everything should go through just as planned.
Very depressing.
