Unfortunately, there are many who not only have a polar opposite view of that, they actually think society would be safer if every single one of us was packing a concealed weapon ALL THE TIME! It's insane to the extreme.

Yeah, I suppose that when some berserker goes on a rampage they might be stopped quicker, but the overall violence rate would skyrocket as people who cannot control their temper blow holes in each other simply because there is a gun present. If you're carrying around a lethal weapon all the time you're probably going to feel edgier and more cocky. Paranoid individuals are going to blast away at shadows, strangers at the door (see the halloween story) or their own family members during heated arguments or stumbling around in the night.

Some gun laws are truly fucked up... it's legal to shoot someone based on a 'perceived threat of imminent danger' or some shit like that in Texas, I believe. That's a pretty nebulous criteria for killing someone and can mean almost anything.
