Too many people making staggeringly huge fortunes... while actually producing nothing, or even losing (other people's) money. Shell games.
There's been a concerted effort on the part of certain families to secure a hereditary oligarchy, of course. The most shocking element in all of this is that many people on the lower rungs of the $ ladder support this system grudgingly, or even wholeheartedly. Is it possible that some human beings are born with a need to be subservient, not just because of environmental upbringing, but because of a physiological difference?
We observe hierarchy in nature all the time, but tend to imagine ourselves distant from any other creature. But people act more like a colony of bees than they would like to admit.
