There's also some concern about the shift to the middle ground by Reclaim the Streets and Earth First since his involvement with them

Beyond that, are you really suggesting that Monbiot's had some sort of steering influence on those (dis)organisations?

I don't quite see how any individual can do that with unorganised, non-hierarchical cell-structure groups who are, in reality, less of a group and more of a convenient banner used by different people who share common aims.

I think it's harder still to do it with Reclaim the Streets given that they haven't existed in any form for five years or more.

RtS was a historical example; I'm just going by what I've heard and read. There are people who seem more eager to speak on the behalf of "a convenient banner" than others (and, yes, I think that sometimes Monbiot aims for credibility by association) and, although, it they never get off the ground there always seems to be someone encouraging the drawing up of 'membership lists' and so on.

Where does anyone think RTS and/or Earth First mellowed as a result of Monbiot's involvement?

Indeed, some people are like that. But Monbiot, if anything, distances himself. I remember an Earth First activist coining the term 'Monbiotic' and defining it as 'overstating the importance of a political group whilst denying membership of it'.

Again, that's true of 'some people'; but when has it been Monbiot?
