A discussion board changed my life!
Mar 27, 2007, 00:00
Well not actually my life.

Since I've had internet access, I've used the web to play backgammon at http://www.dailygammon.com

As with many sites, alongside the games, there is a discussion board, or rather, two discussion boards - a moderated general board, and an unmoderated political board.

It's fairly typical. American dominated, and mainly full of the usual partisan bickering and flame wars.

Still, some people make an effort, and I've posted stuff from here and elsewhere, from time to time, under different nicknames as I get fed up with it and jack it in, only to miss it and rejoin a couple of months or so later.

Anyway, my latest incarnation spotted this post.

"How this board has changed me.

The subject of consumption comes up here often, as a result I have been changed. I no longer feel that I can just consume at will. Something has to be saved for the future.

With this in mind I have made several changes in my life over the past year.

1-We moved from a very energy inefficient home, to one that is superbly energy efficient. After settling in and doing some calculations on electric usage. I believe we will consume less than ΒΌ of the electric this year over last. Good stuff no?

2-I bought my wife a small fuel efficient Nissan. We use this car for as much of our travel as we can. Leaving my 15 mpg Ford truck in the driveway. This should save quite a bit of fuel.

3-As most know I am a Charter Captain, I make part of my living running boats. To serve my clients I need a comfortable boat. Unfortunately this comfort comes with a price, it consumes a large amount of fuel while underway. To offset this, I have ordered a small efficient 'poling skiff' with a small outboard. This boat will consume far less fuel than my other one. I will use this second boat when I fish alone and do not need to concern myself with the comfort of my clients. This may cut my on the water fuel consumption by as much as 25%, maybe more.

The downside of all the above is a huge outlay of cash, far more than I had available to me. So if any of ya'll that helped sway my thoughts on consumption and make these changes feel compelled, I am accepting donations!!!!

Yours in conservation, Captain T. Mills

So something at least. Good to know that people are listening, despite all the bullshit that clogs up such boards.
