Hopefully the monarchy will die with the queen. Somehow I don't think Charles will be allowed to take the throne. The strange (alleged) master servant role reversal alluded to a while back is probably just one sign of the forces at work against him.

With luck William will decline the dubious job for life that will be offered to him. Who'd want it? I actually feel sorry for the royal family.

Actually, IMO moaning about monarchy is really moaning about the impossibility of devising a satisfactory system of government.

Government might work in this country if you abolished the monarchy and didn't replace it with a presidency, but it would be dangerous to reduce the number of foci at the top as the PM would tend to take even more presidential powers and, because he also controls parliament, we'd be worse off than most other countries that have actual presidents.

I'm all for finding a royal bloodline that has better DNA in it, and getting rid of all the privilege and snobbery that it fosters, but keeping it hereditary (shock horror!) or subject to a lottery draw (which is the same thing) has a lot to be said for it. Elected presidencies or elected monarchies attract the wrong sort. We'd get a Bush type maybe. Or a Jade Goody. Neither would be ideal.

One of these days, a decent smart sensible monarch will come along (William?) who'll make a hell of a good job of it and all you revolutionaries will go quiet for another century. ;)
