Sky, Sun, Murdoch
Feb 03, 2006, 16:03
There are a couple of discussion boards for student welfare advisers that I'm registered with. In the midst of a dicussion yesterday, someone said 'I don't like Sky' and was asked why.

This reply came in this morning and I think it's a good summary:

"One issue is Murdoch's union-busting activities in the 80s. There are also plenty of other issues such as: Murdoch's politics and direct influence on politicians; rank sexism in many of his publications (Page 3 etc); leading role in the commercialisation and privatisation of public spaces and activities (including sex); the growth of monopolies; cultural imperialism and vulgarisation. This is the wrong place to discuss it and the processes are complex but are clearly represented in student unions - hence my daily trip to buy a newpaper in the SU shop feels a bit like walking into a brothel because of the ranks of magazines above covered in photos not unlike Page 3."

How about Murdoch/News Intermationals tax avoidance? All the more galling because of Murdochs papers panning of al the usual tabloid suspects who are supposedly draining this countries of its resources, asylum seekers, single parent mothers, etc, etc, etc

See this article by George Monbiot:
