Ok - better than what we could have I guess. I don't believe for one minute that socilaism is a dead ideology - I meet plenty of people in this country who know in their heart that it is right, and in global terms it's very strong (visit latin America, take the political temperature on the ground). Maybe the big weakness (and strength) of socialist ideology is its simplicity/ tendency to simplify issues - this makes it an easy target, and I agree with you when you say that for a while it ceased to be attractive to the voters. And yes, it was a great shame about John Smith.

Yeah, that human nature is a tricky thing. Not sure if Socialism is something that people "spout" - I know plenty who feel it to be right, and believe in it. Just because we can't achieve the ideal doesn't mean that our beliefs and actions can't be informed by it. I think The World is a poorer place without ideology - less people want to engage with politics since "the end of history" brigade started winning with their line of "you can't do anything about it, we're all middle class now, market forces are best, etc etc. " line. I think it's worth standing against all that if you can, in whatever small way.

The owls. Sorry, manao, it's another obscure (and irrelevent) TV reference. Twin Peaks this time. Twin Peaks and The Chuckle Brothers. I'm just so cultured.

I was a Labour party activist back in the mid 80's, working hard to try to build up my local youth section. We weren't short of things to fight, with the Liverpool city council situation, the Poll tax and what have you. We seemed to have to spend more time battling the labour party heirarchy than we did trying to campaign against the conservatives. The Labour party silenced the left with purges and expulsions back in the late 1980s, and the LPYS (Labour Party Young Socialists) was closed down. The New Labour is just the latest step on a road that began twenty years or more ago. The peoples flag is palest pink. It's not as red as you may think. White collar workers wave and cheer. A labour government is here. We'll change the country bit by bit. So nobody will notice it. And just to prove we're still sincere. We'll sing the red flag once a year.
