I'll give you an art related clue.
I intensely dislike the Baltic Arts centre.
If you want to find a cultural backwater trying to establish itself as a centre for international art by chucking millions into the pockets of devt. corporations and buying in all the directors Norwegian friends, you could do far worse than dear, mucky old Newcastle/Gateshead upon Tyne. So few locals give a shite about art that those who do can get away with blue murder.

I'm off to reminisce about the time they brought fine art to the Byker housing projects and some of it (car tyres as stonehenge) got set on fire by the highly appreciative local kids. Can't imagine why we didn't win the bid for city of culture. I thought it was a fine piece of performance in the best tradition of pyro-expressionism. The perpetrators just thought it was something to do on a friday night.
