"Not many other cities have this actually..."

It's always there somewhere, I think it's just that a lot of places suffer from a serious imbalance between the number of creative, conscious folk and those who seem to prefer to never think and never question. And whilst I catch your drift Lawrence, about musos and artists, up here in my neck of the woods, the whole arty/music scene is so detached and isolated from the rest of the country, it seems to be getting absorbed into some pseudo-corporate development agency scam. Anything that doesn't conform, or produce profit seems to be getting blatted into nothingness. But it'll come back.

Keep creating stuff, even if it's just for the sake of it.

So you live in NYC I take it? I can see where yr coming from there... Although last time I was there there was a cool space called the Orensantz Center, I believe that's what it was called. I saw Current 93 there -- told the doorman that I might send my art sides there before I left. Never got to do it though. Things are pretty closed in Soho, I agree, as no other space there seemed too interested in my work...

NYC! 'Fraid not.
I'll give you an art related clue.
I intensely dislike the Baltic Arts centre.
If you want to find a cultural backwater trying to establish itself as a centre for international art by chucking millions into the pockets of devt. corporations and buying in all the directors Norwegian friends, you could do far worse than dear, mucky old Newcastle/Gateshead upon Tyne. So few locals give a shite about art that those who do can get away with blue murder.

I'm off to reminisce about the time they brought fine art to the Byker housing projects and some of it (car tyres as stonehenge) got set on fire by the highly appreciative local kids. Can't imagine why we didn't win the bid for city of culture. I thought it was a fine piece of performance in the best tradition of pyro-expressionism. The perpetrators just thought it was something to do on a friday night.
