My sister went to Uni at Falmer, not too far away. She reckoned that Firle, and Lewes, I think, were the creepiest places she'd ever been to. Usually, they burn effigies of the Pope and various saints. In complete silence..........

I think I went to that one year and they burnt a big Thunderbirds rocket. This latest one is unforgivable though - effigies of real people (ethnic minorities as well) being burnt next to blazing crosses. Yeeuurgh.

>But Richard Gravett, chairman of Firle Bonfire >Society, said: "There was no racist slant towards >anyone from the Travelling community. If >anything, it's actually completely the other way. >"It is to try to make people sit up and listen and >realise that these people obviously - as all of us >do - need somewhere to live." Yes, of course. That's why people burn American flags - to highlight the importance of the American way of life. And the Nazis burnt books to bring attention to Jweish literature. And "pikey" is obviously a term on endearment in that part of the world. Fucking prick.
