Discovery of paired carvings at Avebury
Jul 09, 2022, 23:05
I believe I have discovered a distinctive class of paired carvings at Avebury, these carvings belong to diamond shaped monoliths. The basic design of these artifacts comprises a large, possibly male, "blocky" face looking up into the sky at an angle, counterbalanced by a horizontally gazing "beaked" or pointed faced character on the other side of the same monolith. I first spotted these faces on the south side of the Swindon Diamond stone, but have now found strong examples on Stones 13b and 34a West Kennet Avenue, and also on Stone 34 North-Western Quadrant.

I trace these images all the way back to the West Kennet Long Barrow, where there is a double headed carving on Stone 21. Presumably this "dual symbol" relates to rebirth.

I have written it all up with detailed diagrams and original photographs here:

Thank you for reading. Best wishes, David
