Fancy doing something REALLY PRODUCTIVE (imo)

I have now sat down with the top front end bod of my councils archaeo services. No, this is not gimmekudos time. Was nec. I told them about More Hall, which I put up on TMA. Yup, h a d gone through a crack. All those cupmarks liked. Person of note's name who inspected noted. I hope to see online evidence it is back out of crack when they have time. Jeeez, I feel sorry for them. They will be using the TMA weblink as first port of call re site. Good, nice people, but oblivious of TMA. And, I think, TMP. They're not now. No criticism. N e v e r assume. They are now aware again of the original finder of above site. He thought they still were. Probably somebody's left ..whether they wanted to go or not. The finder is a wealth of both info and new sites. Coming this way as legs etc permit. As a slightly devious but well meant suggestion perhaps others here may now care to contact their archaeo services re something about a site on TMA, citing the weblink. Could be an innocuous question, heads up about something at site, whatever. That way TMA may become on radars of people oblivious who may find its content of great worth. Pix: 'faces' to sites as a minimum. They may even find sites they didn't know they had too. Evidence provided above. I think this may be a good idea. And positive use of ten minutes time. Feel free to disagree. Silly me forgot to mention this forum.

Well done. It occurs to me that, in my experience, many council's archaeo dept's have gone through significant organisational change during the last few years, some of them now tucked into other dept's like "Leisure Services" etc. Must have been disruptive to continuity not to say downright upsetting for the personnel who survived the changes.

I have now seen what it is like to work in an archaeo department at the moment. It is pitiful. A few people with dedication oozing from the pores, having to share computer time, even having to ration photocopying because of money. And working part time, it seems. I feel so sorry for those that are left and those that may have had to go. They can't get outside as they'd like, I have no doubt. What they c a n do is go online and do their best despite everything. TMA - and TMP etc - may have a very productive part to play in this, should contributors want. My opinion. Feel free to disagree or make best use of the website that the Drude maintains at his expense. This may involve stfu.

Well done Spencer for plugging away. Local Authority archaeological services and monument records are not generally as high profile or as emotive as say, library services - which have been slashed in towns around the country. There is a malaise in the UK at the moment, constantly hearing about the NHS staggering under demand; current directionless politics (aka waiting for the car crash) etc. etc. So yes, you are doing something really productive and I applaud your efforts.

Thank you, June. One can but try. I am blessed that these people seem to keep crossing the path of an inexperienced amateur such as myself, and they are very kind, intelligent human beings, so far. I was in contact with Alison Sheridan a while back for something D&G related, for example. What you may see on television is not a put on, I can assure you. Very Nice Lady : )

In Scotland most archaeology is done by arms length contractors brought in to do rescue archaeology or pre-housing development assessments, watching briefs etc. "Heritage" organisations like RCAHMS, Historic Environment Scotland etc. are a slightly different matter and have some real mavericks at large in their corridors. All I have found to be approachable.
