iPlayer Radio 3 - Cornerstones: The Essay

Hello,

Pop Tin

I thought I'd bring this little series to your attention:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08966p2/episodes/player

"Series in which five different writers reflect on how a favoured location is determined by its underlying geology"

I've just listened to the first on quartz, in which the author Linda Cracknell talks about the properties of the stone. In so doing, she talks about cup marks and their meaning, and the sound of quartz on quartz...

Anyay, just thought I'd bung it up. It may be of interest. If you can get past the "This isn't just any rock, this is M&S time-weathered, lashed by wind and rain..." tone..

I haven't listened to the other four, but I see the last is Chalk.

Hi Pilgrim, lovely to see you back, even though it is only 'in and out'. Will listen, love these little gems that appear on the radio, one of my favourite poems is about chalk.

Thanks for this. Have just listened to 'Chalk' - as a few weeks back walked from the village of Bratton up to Bratton Camp/Westbury White Horse. As Alyson Hallett says, the Horse has been concreted over for ease of maintenance - a great shame I feel. She mentions the massive chalk quarries which are hidden from view, owned and used the nearby cement works (now closed) as you need chalk to make cement. What I didn't know until now is that chalk is made plankton over 35 million years ago. Whilst extolling the virtues of chalk she tips her hat to Uffington White Horse, hill figures and the Lascaux cave paintings. Plus snooker cues.
Very good. Will listen to the others later.
