I caught R4's Book of the Week by accident at 12.30am this morning (yesterday really). Iona, Rum, St Kilda and Jura are the other episodes - all available online. By Madeleine Bunting. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0858w45#play

The first one - the Jura one - was fascinating. Mostly about Orwell's time on Jura at Barnhill. It brought back some memories. https://youtu.be/fqQ0hAi1QCQ

Ever been to Jura? There is absolutely nothing there. A few buildings and a visitors centre. No disco or anything! The wildlife is fairly good though..if you have a couple of weeks to spare! Iona is fairly nice though.

I didn't know the inspiration for his novel 1984 came from his time there. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08575fm

Been listening all week, her book which is a definite must is Madeline Bunting - Love of Country - a Hebridean Journey. Her other book is about this part of the countryside, The Plot - A Biography of an English Acre. She has the art of melding history.....
