'Love of Country' - Lewis
Dec 23, 2016, 16:03
I caught R4's Book of the Week by accident at 12.30am this morning (yesterday really). Iona, Rum, St Kilda and Jura are the other episodes - all available online. By Madeleine Bunting.

The first one - the Jura one - was fascinating. Mostly about Orwell's time on Jura at Barnhill. It brought back some memories.

Ever been to Jura? There is absolutely nothing there. A few buildings and a visitors centre. No disco or anything!

The wildlife is fairly good though..if you have a couple of weeks to spare!

Iona is fairly nice though.

The above link is about the Ascent of Bienn an Oir in 2001 - maybe your customary drollness HD :)

Have just listened to the Jura episode and as you say it is a fascinating insight into George Orwell's life at Barnhill. I didn't know the inspiration for his novel 1984 came from his time there.

Been listening all week, her book which is a definite must is Madeline Bunting - Love of Country - a Hebridean Journey. Her other book is about this part of the countryside, The Plot - A Biography of an English Acre. She has the art of melding history.....
