SITE DAMAGE & FLY-TIPPING NOTED BY MEMBERS
Sep 27, 2015, 12:26
Hi all

Ongoing personal experiences of maltreatment of prehistoric sites - particularly in respect of fly-tipping in South Wales, something which appears to have grown to reach endemic proportions - suggests a need for an ongoing thread to log incidents/responses from authorities... e.g:

If the Eds are ok with this it might well give us the opportunity to follow up other members' enquiries and start applying pressure upon local authorities to do something. Not sure what that something is, but guess the first step is to highlight the problems and keep at it.

I think Carl contacted CADW about this one:

Good plan. Maybe precede each one with the name of the body that needs to know, CADW, HS etc and then we could (all) send them a link to the thread periodically, a sort of mass nag.

I used to take great pains to try and exclude the offending filth from South Walian images but guess we really need to show it how it is. You're right. It would be much more productive to work with the authorities, be their observers on the ground. However occasional solitary e-mails are easily ignored. If so we need to make ourselves a pain in the arse so these places will still be available for future generations to see.

Good plan all round. I'm a monitor for EH/HE on Bodmin Moor and work closely with the various HAR (Heritage at Risk) officers. Any damage I come across when visiting sites or rubbish dumped, I report back to the officer in charge for that area and fill out a report. Being helpful to them has been returned in spades as I am invited to take part in digs and even had my own stone circle to work on (Louden). It has been a great way for me to 'get involved' and I thoroughly recommend it. Beats hands down just talking about it all the time that's for sure :-)

Good plan Mr G, I already inform HS of any damage/littering etc and the Aberdeenshire archaeos also. Glad to say the Aberdeen City/Shire folks have cleaned up a few of them.

Yes I did TSC, although I don't know if they did anything about it?
As with most readers of this esteemed forum I have travelled a fair bit around this wonderful country of ours and I am afraid to say (as I have said previously) South Wales is by far the worst offender of fly-tipping etc. It is a 'Valleys mentality' a 'can't care less attitude', the same reason they light grass fires every summer. Obviously not everyone is like this but unfortunately there is a sizable minority that does think / act that way :(

Sad to say but some prat has chiseled their name into Maen Llia on it's Eastern face . TD are the initials , in several places , as once wasn't seemingly enough. I think I know what the letters stand for , and the first word is "total".
On another note, the fence that I thought was permanent has been removed ,so much for my certainty then.

Why would someone take the time and effort to go all that way with a hammer and chisel to cause such damage? I dispair - I really do :(
