I have heard that there usually is a small, friendly crowd at Mitchell's Fold, but in my eyes it's a sunset site, not sunrise.

Druids circle above Penmaenmawr, fabulous place for a solstice sunrise, with upto a dozen "other people", though why you'd want them i cant imagine.

Went to Castlerigg for the solstice a few years back and it was excellent (I know you said it was excluded though). A fine gathering of all different types there with drumming and other musics going on too. Very family friendly atmosphere too. The bonus was that it wasn't cloudy or raining so had a wonderful view of the rising sun.

Was talking to a bloke who went there every year and he said it was the first time in 20 years that it wasn't cloudy that morning.

The beautiful low lying mist down in the valley also made it a very magical experience! Would definitely go there again for the solstice!

Only slight concern was that people had built a bonfire very close to the circle itself. I have nothing against bonfires, in fact I love em, but just thought it was too close to the archaeology for my liking.

Here's a few photos of the occasion:

Cool photos. I went to Castlerigg for Solstice many moons ago (1994 maybe?) and it was a lot like you described, but I'll looking for somewhere new.

Avebury Solstice, wandering 'lonely as a cloud' not to be expected!

Both auroras and noctilucent clouds may coincide with the solstice this year. Worth keeping tabs on http://spaceweather.com

Now the parties are over, have seen many photos/videos from Avebury and Stonehenge. A few from Castlerigg which were rather lovely in the low cloud.
I am wondering was the midsummer solstice actually celebrated in prehistory or even in the first millennium?
I totally get the Midwinter Solstice celebrations - driving away the darkness and the return of the light.

Caerphilly Mountain for me.
Despite the cloud it was a spectacular sunrise.
Well worth getting up for!

Drove up to Mam Tor in the end. The cold wind and changeable weather put us off actually climbing the mother hill to see the sun rise, so we drove a short distance down the other side of the hill where we were able to get a spectacular view of the solstice sunrise. I know the sun rises and sets every day, but for some reason we left feeling we had witnessed something pretty special and felt honoured. A few brave souls had made their way up the hill, but mostly it was a lot quieter than I expected with only about 10 max making the trek up there and where we were we were completely alone. Fab experience and I am so glad we took the chance and went (which we nearly didn't) :-)
