I took my sun to the summer solstice at Avebury in the summer and he is keen to attend the winter solstice at Avebury. Can anyone shed light on when this will be and what we are likely to see/experience at Avebury? EH told us to come on Sunday but this page indicates Monday morning? Are we better to come at sunrise on the Monday or another time? Can one of you help please? My 9yr old is worried he's going to miss it! thank you, Hi Dave, in terms of the experience of being at Avebury around solstice time you're probably better off going on Sunday. I would imagine there will be more going on than the Monday, but it depends on what kind of experience you are after. It will probably be a more muted version of what you experienced during the summer. I'm unaware of any obvious alignments at avebury toward midwinter sunrise/sunset but one or two others here may correct me on that. If your son is interested in the celebrations, the 'spectacle' of it all, if you will, have you considered going to stonehenge? Stonehenge is generally considered to be aligned on the midwinter sunset but people will gather there and celebrate he sunrise! It's all a bit confusing. Hope you and your son have an enjoyable time wherever you go.

I think people will be celebrating at Avebury on Sunday and into Monday morning.

I guess it's an age thing but I'd pay quite a lot of money not to go to the Winter Solstice if it snows - see this https://twitter.com/ST0NEHENGE Incidentally, if you're very rich, you can go on a solstice tour of both places. http://stonehengetours.com/stonehenge-winter-solstice-tour.htm Just to add to the confusion, that goes to the sunset at Stonehenge. Not sure about sunrise.

Not to mention the human sacrifices and for the under 60s the later orgy ! (the over 60s are the sacrifices)

Shan't be out on the Solstice itself, but finally got round to visiting the restored Devil's Quoits today, on a lovely sunny day. Hope everyone out tomorrow (or Monday) has a great time.

Then, (just for a change) a tramp around Minions followed by bacon sarnies in the shop/café. Now, they ARE worth getting out of bed for :-)

Today's the day most people celebrate and I have seen some lovely photos - though clearly not taken this morning which was dreary. I always think winter solstice is a state of mind and it can happen at any time around this period. It happened for me last Saturday - I was travelling down to Brighton from where I live in Wiltshire. I packed the night before and set off early by foot for the station. The sun was coming up as I walked through the town centre lighting the mundane with a temporary brilliance. I caught an earlier train than planned to Reading, the sun had by then woken up the Uffington White Horse. There was time to organise a Danish and a cup of Earl Grey to take on the train for the next leg down of the journey to Gatwick. Watched the beautiful Surrey countryside slide by in the bright winter sunlight. By the time I reached Brighton I was in a very solsticey frame of mind.
