'Thom described them as being more like a spiral than a circle' 7) Z&Y holes, a circle, spiral, or an arc ? Attempts to impose a circle as in the Wikipedia diagram - ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_and_Z_Holes ) are not able to follow the holes as accurately as the arcs are. The Y and Z holes are not a circle or a spiral, they are two arcs. (as defined by maths geometric shapes) The Eastern arc is just too regular to be an accidentally irregularity.

Dave1982 wrote: 'a) But as Field and Pearson point out the siting of some of the pits in the NE on the Cleal plan are out because Hawley got the co-ordinates wrong .' With reference to 'Stonehenge Amesbury Survey Report' - Field and Pearson, I was not able to find any reference to Hawley's lack of decent co-ordinates. So at present I cannot reply Did not Field and Pearson produce an update diagram? Dave1982 Hawley probably didn’t have a surveyor on site , according to Field and Pearson . They are the only ones that I can think of who mention it . No diagram of the Y and Zs in the report .

Best wishes - Dave1982 The Sarsens are primary as all the evidence points to them being so .

Colonel Hawley was an officer in the Royal Engineers so would be more than capable of surveying work, and Robert Newall, his assistant, was a draughtsman from the Office of Works. So the required skills were there although whether or not they were applied conscientiously is another matter. I don't know if the last paragraph of the following is of interest to you ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hawley
