Also, it appears that the TMA links posted should still work...

BRAC anyone recognise this RA? Location?
Jan 25, 2014, 20:21
Does anyone recognise this fella and can anyone help identify the location of the RA? The BRAC entry only gives the intriguing clue of "Tarbolton"...

http://ukra.jalbum.net/brac/More%20BRAC/Rock%20Art%20Miscellany/Rock%20Faces/index.html#river_god.07.neil-lynch-tarbolton..jpg

I grew up in Ayrshire and know the Tarbolton area well. There isn't really a river at Tarbolton, the Water of Fail is close by and the River Ayr is a mile or so away to the South of Tarbolton at Stair. Ballochmyle Walls is a few miles further upstream...
Has this mibbe been mislabelled when the new BRAC was being assembled? Or have I been missing this little fella all these years? Anyone help?

Hello HB
i saw your message on BRAC and have been looking into it.
Unfortunately this is the problem i thought we might hit with some of the more obscure sites. Jan would have known, but he is no longer with us.
I don't know who Neil Lynch is but the caption to the photo comes from the photo's filename, so it should(?) be right.
Neil lynch's name appears on another photo in the Coilsfiield-tarbolton page of the Ayrshire section. It is a map with a red dot marking old king coles grave. On the map there is also a location circled to the south east of the dot - by the river Ayr, might this be the 'river god' site? could be worth checking if nothing else turns up.
I will see if i can find anything else - but that might be it.
Cheers
GC

It looks like Jan Brouwer visited the Tarbolton barrow site in 2007.
I wonder if the 'river god' is actually a representation of Alexander Peden the 17th Cent preacher? as you probably know there is Peden's Cove by the river Ayr near Failford, so its maybe somewhere in the gorge around there.
Good luck with your visit.

I had thought about the Peden site. There are a lot of photos of his cave, steps etc. online but none of "the man" in the BRAC photo. The carving is certainly of a different tradition than the RA up river at Ballochmyle and the hairstyle has a certain "period" feel to it.
Postponed the trip this weekend due to sever weather, flooding and a heavy spate on the river. Will be down that way soon though.
