Why so serious?
Jan 23, 2013, 11:44
In the spirit of genuine enquiry, why do people think so many discussions on this forum descend into personal conflict? I appreciate that it's not particularly unusual for debate to become polarised, but what I fail to understand is why it seems that people quickly lose respect for the integrity of other people's opinions.

For example, I can understand why some people object to re-erecting stones at Avebury. I disagree with that opinion, but where it's supported with logic, I can understand how people arrive at that. At the very least, I respect that that view is held with integrity, on the basis of principles similar to my own. I am also open to having my own opinion changed, and retain an open mind on the basis that I may not have considered every angle or be in possession of every salient fact.

So why can we not all adopt a similar attitude? Discuss our ideas, and use our differences to arrive at a greater understanding? We all share (hopefully) the same principles, and it is extremely sad to see threads descend into personal conflict with such depressing regularity.
