Winter Solstice 2012
Dec 02, 2012, 20:04
This year for the first time in ages I get to venture out on the Solstice - anyone got any tips/venues/gatherings of like-minded folks in N.Wales? Subject to weather and travel conditions I plan to get to somewhere on Anglesey/Llyn/Gwynedd/Flintshire.

No gatherings as such , but i'll bet they're will be someone at the Druids circle above Penmaenmawr, me for instance with luck.

Cerrig Pryffaid should have a good line to the sunrise, it could have an alignment built into the stone circle too.

The Poets stone/ Maen y Bardd has good views east.

I did a solstice sunrise at Meini Hirion in north west Angelsey once, clouds fouled it up though. Bryn Celli Ddu might be good too.

Up Gop hill, or any of the hill forts along the Clwyddian range all have good views east.

Just a few to be going on with

I wasn't sure from the field notes but is the outlier aligned 120 degrees as seen from the from the centre of the circle ?

Thanks Postman, I know these sites well and weather/health permitting I'll be out there somewhere.

It looks like the solstice from the stone circle would be at 132 degrees i.e. to the right of Pen -Y- Gaer and left of Penygadair from the circle .

22nd & 23rd are on a weekend so hopefully makes it easier to get out. I'm hopefully heading to http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/7929/glastrigan.html. I think it may be aligned to winter solstice sunset.

If anyone has any other suggestions for around the north munster area I'd love to give it a go.

So it rises between a forted hill top and a mountain peak ?
Sounds interesting, I'd like to see that

The rise point on the horizon is much farther to the south east but the orientation from the stone circle towards the rise point is between the hill fort and hill .

Looks interesting , can't see it on GE but on Flash earth it looks to be aligned something like 210 /30 degrees in which case it might be closer to a standstill to the SW than the solstcie .
